Kristin O’Connor, Author of Blood Type Cookbooks Shares Her Journey
Today we have a special treat for you. Kristin O’Connor, the author of the Eat Right for Your Type Personalized Cookbooks, shares her journey—from the web of the traditional medical system to her discovery of personalized nutrition – and how it changed not only her health, but the direction of her life and career.
Q: How did you find the Blood Type Diet?
KO: I had health issues. It was one thing after another and the medical doctors that I saw said that I would have to be on medication for life, and at 21 years old, I did not want to face a life of being on meds. With nowhere else to go, I turned to alternative medicine. The doctor that I saw put me on a diet that eliminated gluten, soy and dairy. I noticed a difference immediately—which makes sense now that I know that I am blood type O—but I still had to be on some medication. My mother had also been sick and she went to see Dr. D’Adamo. Within three months she was 75% better and within six months she had fully recovered. Seeing her amazing recovery prompted me to go too, I can now say that I’m almost completely off all medication!
Q: How has the Blood Type Diet changed your life?
KO: Obviously, the health benefits have been fantastic! When I started making my dietary changes, I had been working as an art therapist at an after school program for children, but I had always loved to cook. As I implemented the changes in my own diet and saw the difference that it made for me, I wanted to spread the word about healthy eating. I thought the easiest way to do this would be to have a cooking show on the Food Network! However, never having had a cooking show, or professional cooking experience, I realized it was a long shot – but that didn’t stop me. I was hired by a production company who developed a show to pitch to Food Network. While the Food Network liked my demo, they passed on the show. The fantastic news was that the same production company who pitched my show, hired me as an Associate Producer—I was thrilled.
Q: How did your experience in television production for the Food Network and the Cooking Channel prepare you to write these cookbooks?
KO: My responsibilities in production vary dramatically from contributing to recipe development, working with the culinary team, and doing lots of research. Being in that environment, surrounded by amazingly talented chefs taught me so much about food—being on set really helped me develop a wide knowledge of food.
Q: How did you come to write the Eat Right for Your Type Personalized Cookbooks with Dr. D’Adamo?
KO: It was all very serendipitous! I was seeing Dr. D’Adamo as a patient and he asked me what I was working on. I explained that I was a contributor to a website called Healthy Child Healthy World as well as the creator of my own blog on eating for optimal health, in addition to doing production work for the Food Network. He mentioned that he was thinking of developing four new Blood Type Diet cookbooks and it took off from there.
Q: How are the Eat Right for Your Type Personalized Cookbooks different than a basic recipe book?
KO: It’s unique because they are not just recipes. I wanted to create a lifestyle cookbook that helps both novices and people who are already familiar with the diet to adapt even more easily. In the books, I introduce new beneficial foods that people may not necessarily be familiar with and make them accessible through the “Featured Ingredient” sections, I include a list of pantry staples, tips for setting up your kitchen, I outline the major avoid foods and where they are hidden in everyday products, and of course, lots and lots of simple go-to recipes. We’ve tested the recipes and had independent testers make them too, so we know that they work and are delicious!
